Disturbing the Scene

I really like the "I Am Sorry" photograph in the last post, but I want to make it better. I want to be able to get the "S" on the word sorry in the picture, but the angel blocks it out. I either have to change perspectives or move the angel. I like the perspective, so moving the angel is the only choice. Given that this is a death scene, and given my concern about disturbing anything, is it acceptable to move the angel to get the shot?

What do you think?

In my opinion, it is perfectly acceptable to move the angel to get the shot. This is not a crime scene...you are not contaminating evidence of any kind. You are continuing to tell the story about the tragedy of these little girls. The angel may have even been moved before, and people (even investigators) move things around after something has happened.

I think it's moving that you are still trying to capture this story.

I hadn't thought about other people having already moved things around. Good point.

Let's take it a step further. What if I took a syringe of water and tried to manufacture a tear on the angel's face? Is that disturbing the scene? Remember the "One Tree Hill" picture? When I posted that on Nikonians, the joke was, "Hey, it looks like someone took a bite out of that tree." I suggested that I could have cloned in some branches to fill it out. The response was, "Well, it depends on whether you are capturing the scene or whether it's intended to be art."

I think there's a little of both in this picture. No more (or as much) as there is to work with, maybe I can get away with a little manipulation. Not my style, though.

Okay...I'm not a fan of manufacturing a tear on the angel's face. I usually try to capture the moment instead of creating the moment. Do you know what I mean? Maybe you could wait until it rained to get that somber feeling and happen to get a shot that looks like the angel is mourning.

In answering your question, I still don't think it is disturbing the scene if you manufacture a tear.

I don't think I could compare it to the "One Tree Hill" pic though because, in my opinion, you're telling a story and mirroring people's feelings about a tragedy in the angel and the words behind her. The tree is just a great tree and photoshopping it would just make it look like a REALLY great tree. I don't know if I'm making any sense, but I think I agree with the statement that it depends on if you're capturing the scene or making art.

All the rain lately is what made me think about this. I don't know if I'd get lucky with Mother Nature or not.
